Fabrication of Microfluidic Structure Based Biosensor Using Roll-to-Roll Gravure Printing

This paper presents a method to fabricate a microfluidic device through polymer solution (polystyrene dissolved in toluene) process by roll-to-roll gravure printing. The printed polymer solution formed a hydrophobic barrier by penetrating as much as the thickness of the paper substrate. Conventional methods require multiple printing or heat treatment processes to form a barrier. However, the method suggested in this paper enables mass production of a paper-based sensor, which can be fabricated from a single printing process without heat treatment in high speed at 3 m/min on continuous substrate. As a result, the fabrication cost can also be reduced. The microfluidic device fabricated by this method can be used as an onsite diagnostic analysis tool in developing countries or at places with little medical infrastructure. Glucose colorimetric assay was fabricated using microfluidic structure by roll-to-roll gravure printing to demonstrate the performance of the fabricated device. Estimated cost of devices is about 1 cent.
