Didactic Broadway: Using Musical Theater in Psychiatric Education

The use of audiovisual media including movies, television, music, and visual art to illustrate psychiatric phenomena and/or stimulate discussion of psychiatric concepts is a well-established tradition in medical education [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. Another popular medium—musical theater—has garnered less attention from educators, but can also be a rich source of material in terms of relevant content and a good way to engage learners.

There are multiple reasons this genre may historically be less utilized by medical educators. Musical theater has traditionally been viewed as escapist entertainment, not sufficiently serious or realistic to be of significant educational value. More practically, in contrast to film and television, theater is less broadly available. Educators may be less familiar with various works. Furthermore, it can be hard to have learners view shows live or for educators to locate clips of shows or scenes.

But with the proliferation of national tours and with several musicals...
