Primary Care Residents Delivering Care: Integration of Office-Based Opioid Treatment into an Internal Medicine Residency Curriculum

The impact of the opioid crisis is staggering with more than 115 deaths resulting from overdose daily in the USA [1]. The economic toll in the USA is estimated at $78.5 billion dollars a year on expenses including healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and corrections resources [2]. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is instrumental in providing a pathway to recovery for patients with opioid use disorder, and office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) is a component of MAT that allows primary care physicians to care for patients with substance use disorder by prescribing buprenorphine-naloxone [3, 4]. OBOT has expanded access to patients by allowing primary care physicians to treat patients with this condition [5]. Despite the advances of OBOT, many primary care physicians have not integrated this care into their clinical practice [6] and internal medicine residency programs have not kept pace with training learners to care for this growing patient population.
