Transient and Steady State Torsional Vibration Analysis of Large Bore Diesel Engines

This article, based on a paper presented at the second Torsional Vibration Symposium in Salzburg, describes a core sequence of the simulation based drive train development process of large bore diesel engines for marine and stationary applications within MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MDT). The classical approach for torsional vibration analysis is using the steady state method. However, some basically transient phenomena cannot be adequately addressed by the use of this approach. The development of the new MDT 175D engine became the starting point for the use of a Modelica based simulation platform, which handles both methods in one environment. This article presents the integration of the CAE software SimulationX into the MDT workflow achieving efficient automated simulations, improve parameter variations and optimisation.
