New Initiative Protects European Public from Fake Medicines
A new Europe-wide initiative, known as the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD), is now in place to help protect the public from fake medicines, says the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) .
In a world-first initiative, the new system (that went live on 9 February 2019) has been developed and coordinated by the European Medicines Verification Organisation, which includes representation from stakeholders across the supply chain of medicines.
The UK has contributed to the development of the FMD over the past 2 years, along with pharmaceutical companies and other partners that have helped fund and set up the system. It utilises new technology based on the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS), allowing medicines dispensed anywhere in the EU to be authenticated.
