Efficient Application of the Fully Variable Valve Train System UpValve

UpValve is the improved version of Pierburg's UniValve concept, ready for series production. This article describes favorable designs and the efficient use of this valve train technology.

Starting point

UpValve is a Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system that allows continuously variable control of the valve lift between full travel and valve shut-off. The system is based on a low-friction Roller Finger Follower (RFF) system with Hydraulic Lash Adjuster (HLA), Figure 1. Via cam follower (RC), the rotation of the Camshaft (C) causes the UpValve Rocker (R) to oscillate around the axis of the roller (RL). By rotating the control shaft (L) this pivot point is shifted along the circular Guide (G), which itself is a circle concentric to the center of the RFF roller (RR). Depending on the angular position of the control shaft and the corresponding rocker position, the contact point between rocker and RR runs through different sections of the working lobe (LR), which in turn consists of a base...
