2-Butanol as a Possible Fuel Component for Gasoline Fuels for the Existing Fleet

The laboratory for internal combustion engines at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences has tested the suitability of 2-butanol as an additive component to gasoline for use in the existing fleet. The focus was on mixture formation and the potential for CO2 emissions under Well-to-Wheel conditions.

Motivation

The usage of 2-butanol as a gasoline fuel component has already been studied in some papers [1, 2]. In comparison to Ethanol, 2-butanol has a lower heating value, which is 44% higher, is less corrosive and its Octan Number is lower. Also possible production methods exist or are developed, which avoid a competition to the food chain [3, 4]. In contrast to 1-butanol, for which a wider range of synthesis methods are investigated [5, 6], 2-butanol provides a higher knock resistance and a lower boiling temperature, which makes it more attractive to be blended with a standard gasoline fuel.
