The 13th International MTZ Conference "Heavy-Duty, On- and Off-Highway Engines" took place on November 6 and 7 in Cologne (Germany). A total of 164 participants from 12 countries discussed the powertrain concepts of the future, exhaust aftertreatment, and alternative fuels, among other subjects.

Manufacturers of large engines are under mounting pressure to act, in the light of changing and increasingly stringent legislation. However, according to Dr. Markus Schwaderlapp, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Deutz AG, manufacturers are in a strong position to overcome future challenges and are developing new solutions in a wide range of different areas. As he explained in his opening speech: "We've learned our lessons on exhaust aftertreatment." Alternative concepts such as electrified machines, hybrid powertrains, and hydrogen systems are ready for use and biofuels and synthetic fuels also form part of the development strategy.
