Water Injection for Meeting Future RDE Requirements for Turbocharged Gasoline Engines

Water injection offers high potential to meet the requirement for stoichiometric operation throughout the engine map at consistently high power density. In this article, FEV Europe demonstrates performance limits of direct and port water injection for boundary conditions of large scale production engine concepts and presents possibilities for efficiency enhancements in combination with water recovery.
The compliance with the emissions limits under RDE conditions is a major challenge in the development process of modern gasoline engines - not least because of the diversity of the driving profiles and their sensitivity to the emissions. While nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particle emissions are limited with conformity factors under RDE conditions, carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are currently only under observation.
