The combustion engine, and in particular the diesel engine, is already regarded by some as an outdated model. As an alternative, electric drives in particular are considered - supplied with electricity by batteries or fuel cells. Such a view, however, is too short-sighted for an industry - for example the shipping industry - in which from a purely physical point of view, today's battery technologies can only be a supplement, but not an alternative to classic combustion engines in marine applications.

Even in the distant future, large tankers or container ships will not travel across the oceans solely with electrical energy from batteries. And even in the energy sector, where large quantities of electricity are already generated from wind and solar energy, there is a need for flexible power plants to bridge the so-called "dark doldrums."
