Innovative System for Exhaust Cooling and Waste Heat Recovery in Gasoline Engines

The exhaust temperature in front of the exhaust-gas turbocharger turbine and the three-way catalytic converter is a performance-limiting factor in gasoline engines. Employing air to cool the exhaust manifold is one way of reducing the temperature of the exhaust gas after the exhaust port in the cylinder head. This contribution describes the integration of a thermal management system in a passenger car gasoline engine with air-cooled exhaust manifold and presents details of the system layout and the requirements for the thermo-mechanical fatigue of the air-cooled exhaust manifold.
