Modular Hybrid Drives with Manual Transmissions

Manual transmissions combine the advantages of lower weight and cost as well as higher efficiency compared with all other light vehicle transmission types. However, the concept of a manually shifted transmission needs to be adapted to new requirements. Magna's hybrid manual transmission concept offers specific advantages for small and mid-size powertrains as a cost-efficient option to create mild hybrid variants on the base of a 48-V electric system.

Why invest into Manual Transmissions?

Listening to conferences or reading publications, the manual transmission is marked for extinction. Hybrid drive concepts - which will become inevitable to comply with stricter CO2legislation - are easier to design and develop by excluding human intervention in the combined function of internal combustion engine and secondary power unit, resulting in a preference to use automatic transmissions as base.
