Piston system for friction reduction in modern gasoline passenger car engines

The LiteKS 4 piston system from KS Kolbenschmidt offers significant advantages in terms of friction and weight thanks to its improved shape, thinner walls and a special aluminum alloy. Both in driving cycle simulation and in tests with a single- cylinder and a three-cylinder gasoline engine, fuel savings of up to 6 % were achieved compared to the standard version.

Motivation

One of the prime tasks in modern engine development is to achieve a further reduction in fuel consumption and the associated CO2emissions. First and foremost, this means having to improve mechanical efficiency. Reducing friction in the piston system, which consists of pistons, piston rings and cylinder surface, offers potential of improving mechanical performance. In order to meet these requirements, KS Kolbenschmidt prepared design variants for pistons featuring reduced friction and weight, which were optimized using the finite element method while taking static and dynamic aspects into account.
