Simulator for Optimized Shift Quality of Manual Transmissions

Shift quality and feel are important factors in the development of manual transmissions, as they have a significant influence on customer satisfaction. In cooperation with Siemens PLM Software, Opel has developed a shift simulator which delivers information on shift quality early on in the development process. This makes it possible to investigate design changes as well as perform customer clinics and ergonomic customer studies at an early stage - without having to manufacture expensive prototype components.

Demands on Manual Transmissions are Increasing

With the future of mobility and the ongoing trend towards electrification and hybridization in mind, Opel recently presented its vision of future electric drives. In this light, it seems reasonable to query whether a manual transmission shift simulator is at all necessary today. The vision of electric driving, however, does not mean focus on the development of conventional technologies such as of manual transmissions should stop....
