Real Driving Simulation on a High-altitude Climate Roller Dynamometer

The installation of the IAV High-altitude and Climate Roller Test Bench has made it possible to run real driving simulations with adjustable temperature, pressure and gradient (ascent). Up to now, such vehicle applications have been feasible exclusively in road testing.

High Efforts for Road Tests

Road tests require long-term advance planning and transporting the vehicles under test to remote regions, which entails a high investment of time and technical effort. Also, local temperatures in the test region are frequently not within the expected range, or a second test run on the same road section may not be possible due to any vehicle issues that may occur.

This inspired the idea of modeling a real-world road test with all relevant influencing variables on a roller dynamometer. Most of the previously existing roller dynamometers only allow predefined speed-time profiles to be run and do not accommodate specific situations such as cornering, trailer towing or traffic simulations.
