Perceived stress and coping in physical education teachers in different career stages

Abstract

Physical education (PE) teachers and PE pre-service teachers are confronted with demands that are specific for physical education. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived stress and coping and their association in PE teachers, PE pre-service teachers and PE students in order to prepare (prospective) PE teachers for handling such specific demands. The sample consisted of 256 PE teachers, 120 PE pre-service teachers and 259 PE students. Perceived stress was measured by the Perceived Stress Questionnaire and coping strategies (focus on positive coping, support coping, active coping and evasive coping) were assessed by the Brief COPE Inventory. Results showed that PE pre-service teachers have significantly higher values in perceived stress than PE teachers and PE students. Moreover, evasive coping is positively associated with perceived stress, especially when PE pre-service teachers use evasive coping strategies. In conclusion, suggestions for improving coping in PE teachers, PE pre-service teachers and PE teachers were made.

Stresserleben und Stressbewältigung bei Sportlehrkräften in unterschiedlichen Phasen der Lehrerbildung

Zusammenfassung

Ausgebildete Sportlehrkräfte und Sportlehrkräfte im Vorbereitungsdienst sind mit fachspezifischen Anforderungen konfrontiert. Das Ziel der Studie war daher, das Stresserleben und die Stressbewältigungsstrategien sowie den Zusammenhang zwischen Stresserleben und Stressbewältigungsstrategien von Sportlehrkräften in unterschiedlichen Phasen der Lehrerbildung zu untersuchen, um (angehende) Sportlehrkräfte angemessen auf den Umgang mit Anforderungen vorzubereiten. Bei insgesamt 256 ausgebildeten Sportlehrkräften, 120 Sportlehrkräften im Vorbereitungsdienst sowie 259 Sportlehramtsstudierenden wurden das Stresserleben mithilfe des Perceived Stress Questionnaire sowie die Stressbewältigungsstrategien (Fokus auf das Positive, Unterstützung, Aktiv, Evasiv) mithilfe des Brief COPE erfasst. Die Ergebnisse ergaben, dass Sportlehrkräfte im Vorbereitungsdienst ein signifikant höheres Stresserleben aufweisen als Sportlehramtsstudierende und ausgebildete Sportlehrkräfte. Des Weiteren zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass evasive Stressbewältigungsstrategien positiv mit dem Stresserleben verbunden sind, insbesondere wenn diese von Sportlehrkräften im Vorbereitungsdienst angewendet werden. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen sollten (angehende) Sportlehrkräfte auf einen systematischen Umgang mit Stress vorbereitet werden.
