Global food and nutrition security: from challenges to solutions
Food and nutrition security are likely to become the greatest problems that humankind will need to address in the near and long-term future. Roughly 11% of the Earth’s population was unable to meet their dietary energy requirements between 2014 and 2016 (FAO 2018b). This estimate represents approximately 795 million people. To add to the complexity of the situation, the global population is expected to grow to nearly 8 billion people by 2023 and to 10 billion people by 2050 (United Nations 2017).
We are faced with the global challenge to feed nutritiously an increasing population using essentially the same amount of agricultural land we use now, while maintaining soil health and reducing fresh water inputs. Healthy soils and safe fresh water are critical to our food production efforts (HLPE 2015) and can provide major ecosystem services by sequestering carbon, neutralizing pollutants and deterring erosion.
