Epidemiological characteristics of childhood obesity in eastern China, 2017–2019

Childhood obesity has becoming an increasing concern in many countries including China [1, 2, 3]. Located in the eastern China, Jiangsu Province is one of the developed regions in China and is also facing this problem.
Our study was based on the project “Surveillance for common disease and health risk factors among students” in Jiangsu Province, which was conducted during 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 academic year. We selected students aged 7–17 years from all cities in Jiangsu Province with each city having two types of schools: one type is from urban area and another type from the rural area. Obesity is defined by body mass index (BMI) in this study, and we used unified classification criteria for overweight, obesity and BMI screening among children and adolescents by Working Group on Obesity in China .
