Samenvatting
Compressieneuropathieën komen vaker voor bij patiënten met diabetes mellitus. Door een veranderde glucosehuishouding kan een intrinsieke zwelling in de perifere zenuwen optreden, waardoor op plaatsen van anatomische vernauwing een grotere kans op beknelling ontstaat. Daarnaast wordt bij diabetes het bindweefsel stugger. Diabetespatiënten met klachten van polyneuropathie hebben om deze reden vaker te maken met beknellingen van zenuwen in zowel de bovenste als de onderste extremiteit. De Rotterdam Diabetic Foot Study is in 2013 gestart om meer inzicht te krijgen in deze klachten, het natuurlijke verloop ervan, de risicofactoren voor deze klachten, en welke patiënten baat zouden kunnen hebben bij een chirurgische interventie voor compressieneuropathie.
