Context: Prior observational and randomized studies have evaluated the impact of initial non-invasive test choice (functional stress testing vs non-invasive coronary angiography) on cost, management strategies and outcome of patients with suspected CAD and stable symptoms. Despite multiple studies and sizable study populations, results have been disparate, particularly with regard to outcome. A single-payer, socialized health care system provides free access to all citizens irrespective of demography and economics, and is a good environment to conduct observational studies of the impact of diagnostic test choice.
