Mitigating Painful Vaccination

The Government of India has been the key provider of vaccines throughout the country for more than four decades. The Immunization schedule has evolved over the past four decades with introduction of newer vaccines to the schedule, and more vaccines will be developed and introduced in the National immunization schedule (NIS) in the years to come.

Immunization injections are the most common sources of iatrogenic pain in the early years being administered at regular intervals through infancy and childhood. Pain from vaccine injections is a source of distress for both children and their caregivers. Addressing pain at the time of vaccination in a feasible, inexpensive and culturally acceptable manner which allays anxiety about vaccination and fear of needles. Not adequately managing these factors can make individuals less likely to accept vaccination, which can lead to vaccine hesitancy for the next dose [1].
