Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Study of Stress Distribution in Straight Frog of Railway Needle

Abstract

In this paper, stresses in a straight frog of railway needle were investigated using finite element commercial code ANSYS. Some photoelasticity experiments were conducted to validate the finite element results. In these experiments, a model of a selected section of frog was manufactured by Plexiglass sheet, and the photoelasticity experiments were performed in Polariscope device. Four parameters including principal stress, strain, third principal strain, and strain energy at different loading conditions were obtained. Finally, experimental results were compared with those of the finite element analysis, and a good agreement between them was noticed.
