Abstract

The thermodynamic properties of the Fe-P-Mn-C(sat.) alloy, which is obtained following the reduction of steelmaking slag or manganese ore, are not adequately clarified. Thus, the current study involved measuring the activity coefficients of both Mn and P in the alloy system. The Fe-P-Mn-C (sat.) alloy (2.5 to 15.2 mass pct of P and 2.9 to 12.8 mass pct of Mn) was equilibrated with Ag in a graphite crucible at 1673 K, and thus several thermodynamic data were obtained as follows: Interaction parameters: \( \varepsilon_{{{\text{Mn }}({\text{C sat}}.)}}^{\text{P}} = - \, 4.72 \pm 0.27, (X_{\text{Mn}} < 0.06, \,X_{\text{P}} < 0.25, \,1673 {\text{K}}) \), \( \varepsilon_{{{\text{C }}({\text{C sat}}.)}}^{\text{P}} = 6.09\, \pm \,0.15, \,(X_{\text{Mn}} < 0.06, \,X_{\text{P}} < 0.25, \,1673 {\text{K}}) \). C solubility: \( X_{{C [{\text{in Fe-P-Mn-C}}\left( {{\text{sat}}.} \right)]}} = 0.19e^{{ - \left( { 6. 0 9X_{\text{P}} - \, 0. 4 7X_{\text{Mn}} } \right)}} \). Activity coefficient: \( { \ln }\gamma_{{{\text{Mn }}\left[ {{\text{in Fe-P-Mn-C}}\left( {{\text{sat}}.} \right)} \right]}} = - \, 4.72X_{\text{P}} - 0.47X_{\text{C}} - 0. 8 7 \), \( { \ln }\gamma_{{{\text{P }}\left[ {{\text{in Fe-P-Mn-C}}\left( {{\text{sat}}.} \right)} \right]}}^{\text{H}} - { \ln }\gamma_{{{\text{P }}\left[ {\text{in Fe-P-C}} \right]}}^{\text{H}} = \varepsilon_{\text{P}}^{\text{Mn}} X_{\text{Mn}} = - 4.72X_{\text{Mn}}, \) and \( { \ln }\gamma_{{{\text{P }}\left[ {{\text{in Fe-P-Mn-C }}\left( {{\text{sat}}.} \right)} \right]}}^{\text{H}} = - 4.72X_{\text{Mn}} + 4.26X_{\text{P}} + 6.09X_{\text{C}} \). In addition, a comparison with the results obtained by previous studies on the selective reduction of steelmaking slag indicated that the activity coefficients of P and Mn obtained in the study were applicable.
