“Cunctando restituit rem”: Teaching, Grown-Up-Ness and the Impulse Society

Gert Biesta’s (2017) volume may be read, by the admission of its author, as the fourth book of his trilogy focussed on the perils plaguing the contemporary educational discourse, namely the predominance of the language of learning (Biesta 2006), the cult of measurement (Biesta 2010) and the effort to eliminate the intrinsic risk in any real educational undertaking (Biesta 2014). While it would be illegitimate to speak of the first three books merely in terms of a pars destruens, since many innovative insights and inspiring conceptual tools are elaborated therein to make sense of education, the fourth volume represents an important evolution and the pars construens acquires an even more substantial character by “complement[ing the critiques in the previous books] by a robust and explicit account of the importance of teaching and the teacher” (Biesta, 2017, p. x).
