Professor Lars-Göran Johansson’s Philosophy of science for scientists is a wide-scope introduction to the philosophy of science that has four outstanding values. The first one is its hybrid nature as a textbook. Anna Estany, in the prologue to her own Introducción a la filosofía de la ciencia, states that authors of textbooks on the philosophy of science can select one or more out of four different approaches: (1) a history of the philosophy of science (in the twentieth century or further back to the Enlightenment, Renaissance or Antiquity); (2) an account of the different philosophical schools, pointing out similarities and differences between them; (3) a “thematic” introduction, covering the main concepts and topics of philosophical reflection; or (4) a problem-based introduction, diving into the big questions and queries traditionally addressed by the discipline.
