Statics of Historic Masonry Constructions: the innovative and interesting book by Mario Como

The book “Statics of Historic Masonry Constructions” by Mario Como (2016) [1] has been published in Springer Series in Solid and Structural Mechanics in 2016. It is the second edition of successful book published in 2013 by the same publisher including new developments, widening and revisions, due to recent research studies achievements.

The book is devoted to give a unitary approach for safety assessment of masonry constructions and definition of restoration interventions. It starts with a comprehensive description of the mechanical properties of the masonry materials and of their components, bricks or stone blocks and mortars. The main feature of the material, consisting in a tensile strength much lower than the compressive one, is clearly pointed out. The second chapter is devoted to the statement of the Fundamentals of Statics of the masonry structures, developed in the framework of the Heyman’s masonry model, based on the assumption of rigid no tension material.
