Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil Obtained from Aristolochia clematitis Leaves from the Western Part of Romania

Aristolochia clematitis L. is a plant from the Aristolochiaceae family, which encompasses over 400 species growing around the world in diverse types of climates and soils [1].

Extensive studies on Aristolochia genus chemical composition have been carried out for more than 80 years, and their various biological activities, such as insecticidal, emmenagogue, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic, have been reported. The composition of volatile compounds in the essential oils, obtained from different parts of different Aristolochia species, revealed the presence, in small percentages, of monoterpenoids in A. elegans and A. gibertii leaves but a percentage of 80.43% in A. ovalifolia, and a rich percentage of sesquiterpenes in A. elegans leaves and A. mollissima, A. heterophylla, and A. cucurbitifolia stems and roots [2, 3].
