First Report on Isolation of N-Isopropyl Palmitamide from the Natural Source Microstylis muscifera: a Potential Chemical Marker for Identification

Microstylis genus is well known for several therapeutic species that are used as a vital component of Ayurvedic and pharmaceutical products having aphrodisiac, diaphoretic, and rejuvenating properties [1, 2]. Microstylis muscifera is a rare, terrestrial perennial, endangered medicinal orchid of the Himalayan region commonly known as Jeevak or Jeevaka in Hindi [3]. Due to high demand and low supply of this plant, manufacturers are using cheap substitutes. However, the literature reveals that more than 60% Ayurvedic parameters as well as pharmacological actions of Ashtawarga plants do not match with their substitutes, leading to reduced efficacy of the drugs along with loss of faith in the use of herbal drugs. Consumers are forced to pay for material which has never been used for manufacturing the formulation.
