Analysis of Proliferation Risk Abatement for Fissile Materials with the Required Run Time in Small Nuclear Power Plants

  • Published:
Atomic Energy Aims and scope

The effect of small additions of Np, Am, and Cm to fresh uranium fuel on the critical mass, heat release, intensity of the spontaneous neutron radiation, and radiation dose rate, i.e., on the characteristics determining the attractiveness of the fuel for use in nuclear weapons, is analyzed for the KLT-40S core. It is shown that adding to the initial fuel about 0.7% Am, Cm requires increasing the initial enrichment by only 1% but considerably decreases the attractiveness of fresh and spent fuel.
