Equations 14 have been typed wrongly during the steps of corrections and some figures and tables are placed way too far from the citations. The publisher regrets this mistake.

where PO is observed ground-based precipitation, PS is satellite-based precipitation, \( {\overline{P}}_{\mathrm{O}} \) the mean observed precipitation, \( {\overline{P}}_{\mathrm{S}} \)the mean satellite precipitation, i is the summation index or the record number in the precipitation time series and N is number of months, seasons and years depending on the time series scale.
