Haematological protective effect of raw extract and nano-Eclipta alba–treated rats in experimentally induced hepatocarcinogenesis

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Eclipta alba (L.) and E. alba nanoparticles on haematological and hepatoprotective parameters in diethyl nitrosamine (DEN)–induced toxicity and hepatocarcinogenesis model in rats. Eighty-one Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups. Group I control (n = 19), group II DEN .01% in water (n = 19), group III (DEN+ raw E. alba 50 mg/kg BW/day) and group IV (DEN+ nano-E. alba 50 mg/kg BW/day). DEN group (II) showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the haemoglobin (Hb), PCV, total erythrocyte and platelet value whereas total leucocyte count (TLC) and absolute neutrophil count showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase when compared with the sham control group. Thus, E. alba nanoparticle treatment was able to offer better protection as compared with the raw E. alba against DEN toxicity. Anaemic changes and thrombocytopenia were less in E. alba treatments. Nano-E. alba could be capable to alleviate the DEN toxicity.
