My rising 4th-grader comes up to my desk:

“Whatcha doin’ Dad?”

“Just some work for the university”

“What is it?”

“Well you’d need calculus to understand”

“Then teach me calculus”

Why hope to grasp

Calculus before algebra

If math is a strict

Brick-by-brick wall

Most students climb ’til they fall,

Lacking other routes?

Yet how can I

Turn down this boy?

How can I deny

His evening wonders

Of dimensions beyond

Storybook limits?

For now, geometry allays:

Shoulder-to-shoulder bars

Nearing what’s beneath

A curve as they gather

Strength in numbers

Up against a wall.
