Non-invasive arterial pressure monitoring revisited

Arterial pressure is a key hemodynamic variable that is often monitored continuously during high-risk surgery and in critically ill patients. Advantages of invasive continuous pressure monitoring include accuracy (assuming proper zeroing), instantaneous detection of pressure changes, and ease of blood sampling.
But catheter insertion is occasionally time-consuming and rarely causes traumatic, hemorrhagic, thrombotic, or infectious complications. Pressure is, therefore, often monitored oscillometrically from a brachial cuff, although the method is intermittent, sometimes unreliable, and bothersome for conscious patients.
In recent years, some non-invasive methods of continuously estimating arterial pressure have been revisited. New methods and sensors have also emerged.
