Mechanism of SiC Formation in the Synthesis of MgO-SiC-C Powder from Magnesite or Magnesia

Abstract

MgO-SiC-C mixed powder is commonly used as the matrix for refractories such as low carbon MgO-C and MgO-SiC-C refractories. Pre-fabricated matrix of MgO-SiC-C composition with uniform phase distribution enhances the properties of refractories. Magnesite (MgCO3) and light burnt magnesia (light MgO) were used as MgO sources in the fabrication of MgO-SiC-C powder. The synthesis mechanisms and the influence of coating materials applied to heated samples were investigated in the preparation of MgO-SiC-C powder. MgO-SiC-C powder fabrication with magnesite as MgO source showed greater SiC content when no coating material was used. On the other hand, coating protection resulted in increased SiC content when light MgO was used for MgO-SiC-C powder fabrication. The results indicate that gas transfer plays an important role in SiC formation during the synthesis of MgO-SiC-C powder.
