Summary

  1. 1.

A survey has been made of the records in six teaching hospitals, of all patients with a diagnosis of regional ileitis.

  2. 2.

The incidence of regional ileitis in the general hospital is much less than is suggested by the reports from special clinics. Only seventy-one proven cases have been collectively observed by the six major Philadelphia hospitals between 1932 and 1939.

  3. 3.

The early form of regional ileitis has the greater incidence in this report, suggesting that all patients with the early form do not progress to the advanced state.

  4. 4.

It is pointed out that a diagnosis of regional ileitis may be warranted in some patients even though operation is not performed.
