Summary

Three cases of a rare renal lesion, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, are presented. Amyloidosis, hitherto unreported in association with this lesion, was found in the liver in one case. The need for an accurate preoperative diagnosis and long-term follow up are discussed. A solution, based on lymphatic obstruction, is proposed for the obscure aetiology of the lesion.
