Generalised osteitis fibrosa cystica

Summary

The development of the present views regarding the cause of generalised osteitis fibrosa cystica is reviewed. The chief features of the condition are summarised and their connection with the underlying parathyroid abnormality pointed out.

Three cases are described from the clinical and radiological, chemical and histological points of view, and the effects of parathyroidectomy on calcium metabolism noted.

Certain unusual features are dealt with in more detail.

The results of an investigation of the relationship of calcium metabolism to state of acid-base equilibrium are given.

The diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and early diagnosis are discussed and mention is made of other conditions sometimes classified as of parathyroid origin.
