Increased IgM levels associated with splenosis?

Summary

One hundred and three splenectomized patients were assessed for evidence of recurrent splenic function using pitted erythrocyte counts and Howell Jolly Body assessments. They were compared to 85 control subjects of comparable age and sex. Recurrent splenic function was identified in twelve of those splenectomized for trauma (48%), in four of those who underwent splenectomy incidental to another operative procedure (19%) and in seven of those who underwent elective splenectomy (12%). It is suggested that recurrent splenic function represents splenosismultiple peritoneal splenic implants. In the trauma group, patients with splenosis had higher lgM levels than those without splenosis.
