Short term results of Cotrel traction in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis

  • 23 Accesses

AN evaluation of the effectiveness of Cotrel dynamic spinal traction in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis is presented. Sixteen patients underwent an initial pre-operative course of Cotrel traction prior to spinal fusion. The average correction of the curve following Cotrel traction was 35% with a further 8% correction being achieved at the time of surgery. Forty nine patients underwent a regime of Cotrel traction as an alternative to bracing. In 59% of the cases the progress of the curve had been arrested or improved. In 41% however, the curve had progressed. These results are significantly poorer than thoseachieved with the Milwaukee brace or Orthoplast Jacket. Cotrel traction alone has no place in the long term nonoperative treatment of idiopathic scoliosis.
