The intrinsic innervation of the ileocaecal region

Summary

The enteric plexuses of the ileo-caecal region of the cat have been studied by means of several techniques of staining and impregnation. No rigid classification of neurones can be made on the bases of staining intensity, dimensions of cell body, or number of processes. Attention is drawn to the presence of cells with large nuclei, and pale or invisible cytoplasm. The neurones of Meissner’s plexus have been found to be paler and smaller than those of Auerbach, with fewer processes. Interstitial cells are seen in large numbers in the submucous layer. They do not bear a strong resemblance to nerve cells, and form no visible connexions with the processes of adjacent neurones.
