Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome presenting as cardiac arrhythmia

Summary

Recent reports suggest that sleep apnoea syndromes, which have excited much interest since first described (Gastautet al, 1966) may be underdiagnosed (Appset al, 1983). The associated cardiac arrhythmias are potentially lethal and may lead to sudden death at night (Stradling, 1982; Guilleminaultet al, 1980). This case illustrates the presentation of a patient with nocturnal cardiac bradyarrhythmias and the subsequent diagnosis and successful treatment of an underlying sleep apnoea syndrome.
