Monitoring the in service performance of highway aggregates in bituminous macadam wearing courses

Abstract

In some parts of Britain premature deterioration of bituminous macadam wearing courses has occurred. To determine the cause and mechanism of this deterioration a programme of monitoring selected road sites is in progress and new techniques have been developed for this purpose. Results indicate that initial breakdown affects the coarse aggregate but that the range of rock types and qualities present is of significance. A mechanism for the observed deterioration is proposed which depends mainly on physical weathering effects.

Résumé

Dans quelques régions de Grande Bretagne on a observé une détérioration prématurée des revêtements bitumineux. Pour déterminer la cause et le mécanisme de ces désordres un programme d'études détaillées de chaussées choisies est en cours et des techniques nouvelles ont été dévelopées. Les résultats indiquent que la dégradation initiale met en cause les granulats à gros grains, mais aussi le type de roche et ses propriétés. Un essai de laboratoire est proposé pour simuler la dégradation observée, il est basé essentiellement sur les effets de l'imbibition et du dessèchement.
