Two drugs which are used in a low and a medium dosage range, respectively, have been formulated with directly compressible excipients and compressed into tablets.
Of the prepared blends, the flow and lubrication properties were investigated. The tablets, containing 5 mg prednisone and 50 mg phenobarbitone, respectively, were investigated for content uniformity, crushing strength, friability, disintegration time, dissolution rate of the drug and stability after storage for 8 weeks at 20‡C and 50% or 85% relative humidity.
The results show that with a knowledge of properties and interactions of drugs, directly compressible excipients and other tablet vehicles, formulations can be composed from which tablets with good properties can be prepared.
