Abstract
"Mean" nonelastic lung resistance\((\bar R_L )\) has been shown to be equal to the ratio of work over the integral of the flow-volume loop ("equivalent" resistance, RL eq) and to the ratio of the integral of the resistive pressure-time curve over the volume of respired air (RL eff) during any phase of the respiratory cycle. This was shown by computer analysis of 267 flow-time and transpulmonary pressure-time curves (expiratory and inspiratory) from 20 subjects.
