Summary
The reaction between acetic anhydride and ethylalcohol, in the absence of solvent, in mol ratio 1∶2 and 2∶1 at different temperatures was investigated, by measuring of the change of the dielectric constant in the two component system.
The Arrhenius activation energy has been estimated abt. 17 kcal/mol and the logarithm of the frequency factor abt. 9.
According to the above data and the fact that the rate of the reaction increases in the presence of HZnCl3 · 2(C2H5)2O, which reacts by H+, the mechanism of reaction should be the following.
The first step, determining the rate of the reaction, should be the formation of a carbonium ion formed by addition of a proton to the anhydride, followed by a nucleophilic substitution reaction with C2H5O−.
