A separation into intra- and intermolecular contributions of nuclear magnetic relaxation rates is necessary for an unambiguous interpretation of experimental results. The wellknown method of dilution with deuterated molecules in the case of proton relaxation however is not applicable to systems with fast intermolecular proton exchange. The necessary conditions are proved for a separation of the two contributions from the frequency dependence of relaxation rates.
Errors resulting from a neglect of small inter- or intramolecular contributions are discussed.
