The state of the cations in the zeolite framework can be differentiated according to the degree of their association in the zeolite cavities. The latter has a deciding influence on the nature of the interaction and catalytic activity of the transition metals in zeolites in the oxidation of CO.
The interaction of CO with isolated Ni cations is relatively improbable. Such an interaction with the band 2217 cm−1 corresponding to it is manifested only at increased concentration of Ni, when the possibility is created for the formation of cation pairs. The catalytic activity of the zeolites is low in both cases and differs little from the activity of HNaY zelolites without transition metals.
The interaction of CO with oxygen in associates of cations on zeolites is accompanied by a stronger polarization of the adsorbate molecules than was observed previously in the case of adsorption of CO on crystalline NiO.
The observed catalytic activity of zeolites in the oxidation of CO is associated with the presence of “nonframework” oxygen.
