An investigation has been made on the catalytic conversions of C11-C18 normal alkanes in the presence of 0.5% Pt-Al2O3, 0.5% Pd-Al2O3, 0.5% Pt-gumbrine, and 0.5% Pd-gumbrine, at 450‡ in a flow system under 30 atm hydrogen pressure.
The principal conversion of the indicated alkanes under these conditions is their isomerization, forming up to 62% isoalkanes, which leads to a 16–48.5‡ lowering of the freezing points of the liquid products obtained and to an increase of the heats of combustion on the average by 140 to 1240 kcal/kg.
The normal alkanes beginning with C16, in the presence of 0.5% Pt-gumbrine, undergo conversions with the formation not only of products of hydrogenolysis, isomerization, and partial hydrocracking, but also of polycyclization products. Thereby, the phenanthrene, benzanthracene, and chrysene systems are formed.
