On the basis of the data obtained for non symmetrical benzyl derivatives of mercury, it was hypothesized that the ionic character of the C-Hg bonds increases in the series iodide < bromide < chloride < acetate.
In a study of the PMR spectra of a number of o-, m-, and p-substituted benzylmercury chlorides, it was shown that the shielding of the methylene protons increases in the series: o-NO2 < p-NO2 < H < m-andp-F < m-Cl, p-CH3 < p-Cl, m- and p-Br, m-CH3 < 3, 5-di-CH3 < o-Cl < o-F, o-CH3 < 2, 6-di-CH3 < 2, 4, 6-tri-CH3.
