Infrared absorption spectroscopy of aqueous solutions with a CO2 laser

Abstract

We measured small concentrations of molecules and ions in aqueous solutions using a double-beam spectrometer with a CO2 laser as a light source. The detection sensitivity for inorganic anions, ethyl alcohol, and glucose is between 8 and 35 mg/l. The considerably improved performance of the laser spectrometer compared to a conventional infrared spectrometer is discussed. The sulphate concentration in the sewage of a textile plant was determined in good agreement with standard chemical methods. A distinct narrowing of the alcohol line at 9.56 μm by a factor of 3 was observed in dilute solutions of ethyl alcohol in water.
